Simeon Williamson is the champion in Birmingham
11th July 2009 – The Lloyd Cowan coached trio of Simeon Williamson, Christine Ohuruogu and Andy Turner secured their places on the plane for the IAAF World T&F Championships in Berlin in August with fine wins in the AVIVA World Trials and British Championships in Birmingham. Young guns Perri Shakes-Drayton and Steph Twell will join them impressive 2nd place finishes.
European U23 Champion Williamson stole the headlines with a 10.05 100m victory over Dwain Chambers and Tyrone Edgar into a -1.8 headwind. "I would have liked to have run sub-10 today," said the 23 year-old, who controversially missed out on selection for the World Championships in Osaka two years ago but is now certain of his place in Berlin next month."I know I'm in shape but I've got to go and do it now. It's the equivalent of sub-10 but it's not sub-10. That's the next step for me. That's the next goal.” Olympic relay gold medalist Mark Lewis-Francis placed 8th in the final on his comeback from injury.
Defending World and Olympic Champion Christine Ohuruogu controlled the 400m to win in 51.26 ahead of Perri Shakes-Drayton in 2nd who took over 1.5 secs off her personal best with 51.81. European No. 1 Andy Turner lived up to his favorites tag with a 13.49 secs victory into a -1.9 wind. Steph Twell made a strong break for home in the 1500m and looked to be the winner but faded slightly in the final 100m to get caught by Charlene Thomas, both athletes recording 4:09.
